The European Commission has revealed its plan to digitalize the Schengen visa. This will replace the mostly paper-based application system to obtain a visa for EU and Schengen countries currently in place. This means the Schengen visa will soon be available through a simplified online application process, similar to the European Travel Information and Authorization
Visa Requirements for Montenegrin Citizens
Visa requirements for citizens of Montenegro are administrative entry restrictions placed by the authorities of other states on Montenegrin passport holders.
The Montenegrin passport currently ranks 45th in terms of travel freedom on the Henley Passport Index among the passports of the world, tied with neighboring North Macedonia. This is because citizens of Montenegro are granted visa-free access or entry with a visa on arrival to up to 100 destinations worldwide.
Montenegrins are currently granted visa exemption to travel to over 70 countries for varying periods of stay varying from 15 days up to 1 year depending on the destination.
To gain entry to these countries, it is normally necessary to present a valid Montenegrin passport upon arrival at a border checkpoint, although in some cases entry is permitted using a valid national ID card of Montenegro.
Approximately 35 counties have implemented an Electronic Travel Visa Authorization program for citizens of Montenegro. These expedited online application systems allow Montenegrin nationals to obtain either an eVisa or electronic visa waiver for their destination without having to wait in long border queues at immigration checkpoints.
Electronic travel authorizations and online visas for Montenegrins are most often granted for short-term stays for purposes of tourism, business, or transit.
For long-term stays or for other purposes, it is necessary to apply for a visa from a diplomatic government office of the destination in Montenegro.
Additionally, an embassy or consulate travel visa for Montenegrins is required to visit over 110 countries and territories worldwide no matter the intended period of stay or travel purpose.
