Visa Requirements for Citizens of Greece

Visa requirements for Greek citizens are administrative entry restrictions established by the authorities of other countries around the world and determine what is needed for travelers from Greece to enter their destination.

As Greece is part of the EU and the Schengen passport-free zone, Greek citizens are granted freedom of movement to visit the other member countries of the Schengen Area.

In addition to this flexibility of traveling to other Schengen countries visa-free, Greek citizens also have visa exemption for short stays in approximately 115 countries around the world. This places the Greek passport in 6th place in terms of freedom of travel according to the Henley Passport Index.

Greek nationals are usually permitted to visit visa-exempt countries for short stays for purposes of either tourism, business, or transit. Otherwise, they must visit a government office of their destination before traveling, either an embassy or a consulate, to obtain a visa.

Although there are many territories that have reached a visa exemption agreement with Greeces, there are roughly 130 countries around the world that require Greek citizens to obtain a visa no matter the length and purpose of the intended stay,

Depending on the destination and the purpose of the stay, this may either be a visa from an embassy or consulate, or an electronic travel visa through an online application. Some countries also permit Greek travelers to obtain a visa on arrival as long as they meet the requirements imposed by the destination country, which we will discuss below.

As a general rule, an electronic visa or visa on arrival for Greek citizens permits a short stay and tourist, business or transit purpose. If Greek travelers want to visit the country for longer periods or for another purpose, they must apply for the corresponding visa, such as a work visa or student visa, at the relevant embassy or consulate.

List of Visa Countries for Greece Passport Holders in 2020

To visit a number of countries around the world, Greek travelers are required to obtain a visa no matter the intended purpose or period of expected stay in the destination.

There are approximately 130 countries that require a Greek citizens to have an approved visa to gain entry to their territory, whether an embassy visa, ​an eVisa though an ​online application or a visa on arrival.

Roughly 30 countries permit travelers from Greece to obtain a visa online before traveling, which usually permits a short stay in the destination for business, tourism, or to transit.

An additional 20 countries also offer a visa on arrival for Greek citizens, although the process of obtaining this type of travel document often involves waiting in long immigration queues at the border of the destination country.

Some countries that offer visa on arrival also permit Greek nationals to obtain an electronic visa, which is often the more convenient option.

There are also around 75 countries that require Greek passport holders to apply for a visa from an embassy or consulate regardless of travel purpose or length of stay. An embassy visa appointment should be made well in advance of travel to allow for sufficient processing time.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization

Electronic travel visa authorization systems allow Greek citizens to apply for an eVisa or digital visa waiver for their destination through an online application.

These programs have been established by the governments of select countries around the world to expedite the process of obtaining travel authorization for Greek passport holders, eliminating the need to visit a government diplomatic office in person or wait in long lines to obtain a visa on arrival.

There are currently roughly 30 countries that permit nationals of Greece to obtain an electronic visa or visa waiver through an online application.

Electronic travel visa authorizations for Greek citizens may be issued for either a single entry or multiple entries and permit short stays of between 14 and 90 days depending on the destination.

They can be obtained by completing a simple online application form with basic passport and biographical details, and once approved, are usually digitally linked to the traveler’s Greek passport.

To apply for an eVisa or electronic visa waiver, it is usually necessary to have a Greek passport with a minimum validity of between 30 and 180 days, depending on the country of destination. Additional supporting documentation, such as a hotel reservation or proof of sufficient funds to cover the stay, may also be requested.

An Electronic travel visa authorization usually permits travelers from Greece to visit the destination for tourist, business, or transit purposes. To visit the country for another motive, it is usually necessary to apply for a consular visa from an embassy of the destination.

Visa on Arrival

A visa on arrival for Greek citizens is a type of travel document issued by immigration authorities at border checkpoints of a select number of destinations worldwide.

There are currently around 20 countries and territories around the world that permit Greek citizens to obtain a visa on arrival. it may be issued as either a single or multiple entry visa, for a tourist, business or transit stay between 7 and 90 days depending on the country of destination.

Visa on arrival requirements for Greek nationals vary depending on the country of destination. However, in most cases the traveler is required to have a Greek passport with a validity of between 30 and 180 days, containing one or two blank pages to receive entry and exit stamps.

The protocol Greek travelers must follow to apply for a visa on arrival involves going directly to a border checkpoint in their destination. Once there, it is normally necessary to wait in an immigration queue to be handed an application to complete by a visa officer.

Some countries that offer visas on arrival also permit travelers from Greece to obtain an electronic visa. In these cases, it is advisable to apply for an eVisa, as this will eliminate the need to wait in a long border queue to submit an application on arrival.

Embassy Visa Required

Greek citizens are required to apply for an embassy visa to visit approximately 75 countries across the globe, regardless of the expected period of stay or the intended purpose of the trip.

To obtain this visa type, it is usually necessary to make an appointment at the nearest diplomatic government office of the destination well well in advance of the expected arrival date in the country, to allow for ample processing time. In some cases, it may take several weeks for a consular visa to be approved.

An embassy visa for Greek nationals may be issued for a number of different travel purposes, as either a tourist visa, business visa, transit visa, work visa, student visa, or other visa option. Varying supporting documentation will be requested depending on the required visa type.

When attending the consular visa interview, the applicant is usually required to complete a form, supply the necessary supporting documentation, and pay an embassy visa fee before the application can be processed.

Visa not Required

At the moment, there are roughly 115 countries that allow Greek citizens visa-free access to their territory for varying periods of short stay depending on the destination.

Visa exemption is usually granted for short visits for either tourism or business purposes, or to transit through the country to an onward destination.

To enter a visa-exempt country, Greek nationals are usually required to have a passport valid for a minimum of between 3 to 6 months from the date of arrival, often containing between 1 to 2 pages to receive an entry/exit stamp from a border official.

In order to visit one of the visa not required countries for longer stays or other permitted purposes, Greek passport holders are required to apply for an embassy visa from the nearest government diplomatic office of their destination.
