Visa Requirements for Citizens of Greece
Visa requirements for Greek citizens are administrative entry restrictions established by the authorities of other countries around the world and determine what is needed for travelers from Greece to enter their destination.
As Greece is part of the EU and the Schengen passport-free zone, Greek citizens are granted freedom of movement to visit the other member countries of the Schengen Area.
In addition to this flexibility of traveling to other Schengen countries visa-free, Greek citizens also have visa exemption for short stays in approximately 115 countries around the world. This places the Greek passport in 6th place in terms of freedom of travel according to the Henley Passport Index.
Greek nationals are usually permitted to visit visa-exempt countries for short stays for purposes of either tourism, business, or transit. Otherwise, they must visit a government office of their destination before traveling, either an embassy or a consulate, to obtain a visa.
Although there are many territories that have reached a visa exemption agreement with Greeces, there are roughly 130 countries around the world that require Greek citizens to obtain a visa no matter the length and purpose of the intended stay,
Depending on the destination and the purpose of the stay, this may either be a visa from an embassy or consulate, or an electronic travel visa through an online application. Some countries also permit Greek travelers to obtain a visa on arrival as long as they meet the requirements imposed by the destination country, which we will discuss below.
As a general rule, an electronic visa or visa on arrival for Greek citizens permits a short stay and tourist, business or transit purpose. If Greek travelers want to visit the country for longer periods or for another purpose, they must apply for the corresponding visa, such as a work visa or student visa, at the relevant embassy or consulate.
