Tanzania eVisa for Japanese Citizens

Electronic Travel Authorization Available

Japanese citizens are eligible to visit both Tanzania and the Zanzibar archipelago with the Tanzania eVisa. The government of Tanzania launched this travel authorization in 2018 to facilitate international tourism into their country. It is entirely online, and eligible citizens from anywhere in the world can submit an application provided they have a stable internet connection. The Tanzania eVisa policies clarify which citizens are eligible to travel there with the eVisa.

Tanzania eVisa Process for Japanese Passport Holders

Japanese nationals planning a short-term visit to Tanzania or Zanzibar for tourism and leisure will find the Tanzania eVisa perfect for their travel needs. This electronic visa grants them a single-entry into the country and authorizes them to stay for 30 days. The eVisa is a more advantageous option for Japanese visitors. They can apply fully online, saving time and money usually spent on personal appointments at an embassy or consulate.

Before beginning the application process, they must check they meet the international travel requirements for Japanese nationals. These requirements are pretty standard and easy to meet.

Japanese travelers with a passport that will expire in less than 6 months or do not have at least one blank page left will have to renew it before submitting their eVisa application.

Japanese citizens with dual nationalities should remember to use the same passport for their Tanzania eVisa request as the one they will eventually use to enter the country. The eVisa for Tanzania is a unique travel authorization. It is not transferrable from one travel document to another and is electronically linked to the original passport that has been used for the application.

As mentioned above, Japanese travelers’ final condition is to make sure they travel for tourism only. If they wish to visit Tanzania for any other purpose, they should schedule a visit to the Tanzanian embassy in Tokyo, and consult with entry authorization suits them more.

Once Japanese applicants receive their eVisa for Tanzania, they must print a copy of both the eVisa and the notification letter and keep it with them with the rest of their travel documents.

Visitors from Japan will be required to present both documents to Tanzanian border control officials to enter the country.

Before booking their tickets, Japanese visitors consider which ports of entry authorize arrivals with the eVisa. They must select one of the following ports of entry for Tanzania and Zanzibar if arriving by land or by air:

  •  Julius Nyerere International Airport

Visa on arrival to Tanzania for Japanese visitors

Japanese passport holders can request a visa on arrival if they have not had time to apply for the eVisa before departing. However, they should note that this option entails waiting for a long time at passport controls once they enter Tanzania. They have to carry the amount of money needed to pay the processing fee in cash and have all of their original documentation while reaching passport controls. With the eVisa, the process is much more convenient and a preferred option for Japanese citizens.

Extending the Tanzania eVisa for Japanese tourists

Japanese tourists who want to stay in Tanzania for longer than the designated 30 days are welcome to request a visa extension. They must simply arrange an appointment at the Immigration office in Dar es Salaam before their eVisa expires and complete a visa extension form. Visitors from Japan are eligible for up to 2 extensions, each covering 3 months of added time. It is important to plan their visit before their eVisa expires since overstaying their allowed number of days can incur legal consequences.
