The South African government launched a pilot scheme for an online visa application in late 2019. The eVisa for South Africa was first made available to citizens of Kenya before being rolled out to other eligible nationalities, including Indian passport holders, in early 2020.

Do I Need a Visa for South Africa from India?

Yes, all Indian nationals traveling to South Africa need a visa to enter the country, regardless of the intended length of stay or the purpose of the visit.

There are only a few nationalities that are visa-free for South Africa, mostly limited to passport holders from select African and Southeast Asian countries.

Citizens of India intending to travel to the country for a short stay are now able to submit a South Africa eVisa application exclusively online, eliminating the need to apply in person from a South African embassy or consulate.

Do Indian children need an eVisa for travel to South Africa?

All minors under the age of 18, regardless of whether they are included on their parent’s passport or not, are required to have an individually approved eVisa to travel to South Africa from India.

However, applications may be submitted on behalf of children by a parent or guardian, if they indicate they are applying for the minor when submitting the South Africa eVisa form.

South African eVisa for Indian Passport Holders

An approved electronic visa for South Africa from India will allow the holder to stay in the country for up to 60 days from the moment of entry. It may be issued as either a single entry or multiple entry visa online, depending on the purpose of the stay.

A South African eVisa allows Indian nationals to visit the country for purposes of either business, tourism, or transit.

To travel to South Africa for other purposes or longer periods of permitted stay, it is necessary to obtain a South African embassy visa from an overseas diplomatic mission.

South Africa eVisa Application for Indian Citizens

In order to apply for a SA visa online, Indian citizens are required to complete a simple online application, which only takes a few minutes to fill in.

It is necessary to complete the South African electronic visa form for Indian citizens with basic personal, passport, and travel information.

Applicants are also required to answer a few questions related to security and health matters before submitting the eVisa form.

Most South African eVisa-eligible nationalities are also required to pay a fee using a valid credit or debit card to complete the application. However, the South Africa eVisa fee is currently waived for Indian passport holders.

How will I receive my eVisa for South Africa from India?

Once approved, an eVisa for South Africa from India is electronically linked to the traveler’s Indian passport.

Nationals of India with dual nationality should take care to use the details of their Indian passport to fill out the online application, as well as to use the same passport when traveling to South Africa.

South Africa eVisa Requirements for Nationals of India

As mentioned above, it is necessary to have an Indian passport to meet the requirements for the eVisa for South Africa for Citizens of India.

This passport must be valid for at least  6 months from the intended arrival date and contain at least one blank page to receive South African entry/exit stamps.

The eVisa requirements for Indian citizens to travel to South Africa also involves supplying a range of other supporting documentation upon entry to the country.

Documents Required for the South Africa eVisa for Indians

Once an online visa is approved, the eVisa holder is able to present their Indian passport at select ports of entry in South Africa to gain entry to the country. At the moment, entry with an eVisa is permitted at 2 South African airports: Lanseria and Ortia. 

When arriving at South African border control, holders of a South Africa eVisa from India are also required to present the following documents to guarantee entry:

  • Evidence of sufficient finances to cover the entire stay in the country
  • Proof of return flight tickets or a ticket to a third destination
  • Certificate of vaccination against yellow fever

The yellow fever certificate is only applicable if the Indian citizen has recently traveled to an area with a risk of yellow fever virus transmission.

It should be noted that if the holder of a South African online visa from India changes their Indian passport during the validity period of the eVisa, they will be required to submit a new electronic application to travel to South Africa.
