In order to simplify its visa scheme and reduce lines at immigration, the Directorate of Immigration and Emigration of Rwanda introduced an electronic visa program.

The Rwanda eVisa, as it is commonly called, is available to foreign visitors from more than 100 countries, including New Zealand nationals.

New Zealanders who wish to travel to Rwanda can take advantage of the country’s eVisa program by filling out the online application form. The entire process is done from the comfort of one’s home, without the need to schedule an in-person appointment at an embassy or wait months to get approval.

Do New Zealanders Need a Visa to Enter Rwanda?

Yes. The visa policy of Rwanda notes that the majority of foreign visitors need to have some type of travel authorization, such as an electronic visa, regular visa, or visa on arrival (VoA) in order to enter the country. This policy includes citizens of New Zealand.

However, New Zealanders will be pleased to hear that they are eligible to obtain a Rwanda electronic visa. The process to apply for a Rwanda eVisa is very straightforward: travelers simply need to fill out the online application, answer a few questions, and pay the processing fee.

In order to save time and have a smoother immigration experience, NZ travelers are advised to apply for their Rwanda visa in advance via the online application form.

New Zealanders who wish to visit Rwanda for purposes other than tourism are advised to arrange a visit to their local Rwandan consulate or embassy for more information.

Benefits of the Rwanda electronic visa for NZ

The Rwanda eVisa for citizens of New Zealand comes with a multitude of benefits.

Besides its convenience and easy application process, the Rwanda eVisa is valid for stays of up to 30 days in the country.

It is a single-entry visa authorization that is valid for 30 days after being issued.

Best of all, the application process takes only a few minutes and there are only four items necessary in order to apply for the Rwanda eVisa.

Documents Required for the Rwanda eVisa Application

Before starting the application form, it is advisable to take a quick glance through the visa requirements for New Zealand citizens.

Nationals of New Zealand must have the following documents before they are able to request a Rwanda eVisa:

  • A New Zealand-issued passport with at least one blank page
  • Upload a scanned image of the aforementioned NZ passport’s biography page
  • A debit or credit card to pay the Rwanda eVisa processing fee
  • Provide an email address that is frequently checked

It is important to note that New Zealand citizens must take the validity of their passports into account before applying for the eVisa. This is because the Directorate of Immigration and Emigration of Rwanda requires that all travelers, including those from NZ, have a minimum validity of 6 months left on their passports in order to enter the country.

If the traveler’s New Zealand passport has an expiration date of fewer than 6 months from the date of arrival in Rwanda, it is necessary to renew the passport first and then apply for the eVisa.

How to Apply For the Rwanda eVisa for NZ Nationals?

New Zealand nationals can apply for their Rwanda eVisa by completing an online visa application form.

The Rwanda eVisa application for New Zealanders can be accessed from any device that has an internet connection, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer. NZ travelers can expect to spend around 15 minutes completing the application from start to finish.

When filling out the Rwanda eVisa application form, New Zealanders can expect to provide the following details:

Personal information:

  • Given name
  • Surname
  • Date of birth
  • Gender

Contact data:

  • Home address
  • Phone number
  • Valid email address

Passport details:

  • Passport issue date
  • Passport expiration date
  • Nationality

The next section will ask applicants to upload a photo of their NZ passport’s biography page, which is typically the first page that contains the holder’s information (photo, name, passport number, etc.)

The final step in the application process is to pay the Rwanda eVisa processing fee with a valid form of payment, such as a credit or debit card. New Zealanders must make sure that the card is suitable for online, international transactions.

How long does it take to process the Rwanda eVisa for nationals of New Zealand?

Once the application is complete, paid for, and successfully submitted, New Zealand nationals can expect to receive their Rwanda eVisa within 3 business days.

In rare cases, it may take longer for the authorization to be processed. This is typically due to large volumes or during the high tourist season.

For this reason, New Zealand citizens are encouraged to apply for their Rwanda electronic visa well ahead of their expected date of departure.
