Citizens of the United Kingdom who wish to visit Rwanda need travel authorization before they can do so.

Thankfully, the process of obtaining authorization to enter Rwanda has been simplified thanks to the introduction of the Rwanda eVisa, which was launched in 2018. This electronic visa is suitable for tourism, can be obtained online, and is valid for stays of up to 30 days.

What is a Rwanda eVisa for British Citizens and What Does It Do?

The Rwanda eVisa is an electronic travel permit that is obtained online and is digitally linked to the holder’s UK passport. Holders of this electronic visa are allowed entry into Rwanda.

The electronic visa for Rwanda allows travelers from more than 100 countries to enter this African country for up to 30 days, including British citizens.

The eVisa to access Rwanda is a simplified visa in the sense that there is no need to visit an embassy in person, submit multiple documents, or wait months for a reply.

Travelers from the United Kingdom simply take 15 minutes to fill out the online form, pay the processing fee, and receive an approved Rwanda eVisa within a couple of business days.

Validity of the Rwanda online visa for UK tourists

The Rwanda eVisa for UK nationals is valid for 30 days from the date of issue, which is convenient for those who are looking for flexibility and/or if they are unsure of when they plan to travel.

Likewise, this electronic visa is suitable for the purposes of tourism and visiting family.

There is also a special Rwanda transit eVisa, which allows UK holders to stay in the country for up to 3 days between their flights.

Can the Rwanda electronic visa for the UK be extended?

The Rwanda eVisa for the UK can be extended once British tourists are in the country. This request must be done in person in the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration located in Kigali.

British individuals who wish to travel from the United Kingdom to Rwanda for other purposes, including but not limited to permanently moving, doing business, employment, studying, or volunteering, or staying in the country for longer periods of time (i.e. past the 30 allotted days) need to contact their closest Rwandan embassy or consulate in advance.

How to Get a Rwanda eVisa For British Citizens?

British citizens who wish to obtain a Rwanda eVisa must fill out the online visa application form that takes around 15 minutes to complete.

Applicants from the UK are asked to fill in personal details regarding their:

  • First name and surname
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Country of birth

There will also be a subsection asking for their contact information, such as a valid email address, phone number, and home address.

It is important to note that British applicants must provide an email address that they frequently check, as this is where the approved Rwanda eVisa will be sent to.

The second section will ask applicants from the United Kingdom to type in the passport data, including:

  • UK passport serial number
  • Passport’s date of issue
  • Passport’s expiration date
  • Passport nationality.

There will be a special field where UK applicants must upload their passport biography page (which includes all of the aforementioned details).

After filling out the application, it is recommended that citizens of the United Kingdom double-check each answer to make sure that it is free of errors or typos. If the information provided was false, misleading, or incorrect, Rwanda’s Directorate of Immigration may reject or delay the approval of the eVisa.

Once everything looks good, British applicants will need to pay the Rwanda eVisa processing fee in order to successfully submit their application.

Rwanda eVisa Requirements for Citizens of the United Kingdom

There are only a few Rwanda electronic visa requirements for UK passport holders. They include the following items:

  • A valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, with at least one empty page and a minimum of 6 months validity from the date of entry
  • A digital scan of the passport’s biography page
  • A valid form of payment, such as a credit or debit card
  • An email address to receive the approved Rwanda eVisa.

British applicants must also abide by the maximum time of stay set by Rwanda for its eVisa: 30 consecutive days.

How Will I Receive My Rwanda eVisa From the UK?

The Rwanda eVisa is typically processed within 3 business days after the application has been submitted.

In certain cases, it may take longer, which is why citizens of the United Kingdom are advised to apply for their Rwanda eVisa well ahead of their travels.

Due to the nature of its electronic format, British citizens will receive their approved Rwanda eVisa via the email address that they provided when filling out the application form.

The approved Rwanda eVisa is electronically linked to the UK holder’s passport. However, it is recommended to carry a copy of the approved eVisa when entering Rwanda, as the border officer may request to see it alongside the traveler’s UK passport.
