The government of Rwanda has introduced an electronic visa program to streamline the arrival of US travelers that are planning to visit the country for short-term tourism.

After launching in 2018, the Rwanda eVisa program is now available to citizens from more than 100 countries around the world, including Americans.

Unlike other visas, the Rwanda eVisa is obtained entirely online and only takes 15 minutes to do so. Citizens of the United States are eligible to apply for the Rwanda electronic visa from the comfort of their home, without the need to set up an in-person appointment at the embassy or submit a multitude of paperwork.

Do Americans Need a Visa to Travel to Rwanda?

One of the most common questions regarding travel to this African country is, “Do US citizens require a visa to visit Rwanda?”

The answer is yes. The government of Rwanda states that most foreign citizens need some sort of travel authorization in order to legally enter the country, which includes American nationals.

According to Rwanda’s current visa policy, there are many different types of visas that US citizens may use to visit Rwanda, from the electronic visa (eVisa) to business visas, employment visas, and even the visa on arrival program (also known as the VoA).

The easiest and most straightforward visa for Americans to obtain is the Rwanda electronic visa.

What does the Rwanda eVisa do for American citizens?

The Rwanda eVisa for Americans is:

  • Valid for 30 days after being issued
  • A single-entry visa
  • A travel permit that allows US visitors to stay in Rwanda for up to 30 days.

The electronic visa to enter Rwanda from the United States can be used for the purposes of tourism, leisure, and visiting friends and family.

Americans who wish to visit Rwanda for other reasons (such as relocating, volunteering, or studying) are encouraged to contact their local Rwanda embassy for more information about the proper visa.

Required Documents for the Rwanda eVisa for US Citizens

Thanks to its simple and convenient structure, there are only a few Rwanda online visa requirements for US citizens. They include the following:

  • Have a valid, United States-issued passport
  • Upload a digital scan of the biographical page of the applicant’s US passport
  • Pay for the Rwandan eVisa processing fee with a credit or debit card
  • Provide a current email address
  • Show a basic travel itinerary of what the US applicant plans to do when in Rwanda

Applicants from the United States should pay special attention to their passport and ensure that it checks these two requirements:

  • It must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Rwanda
  • It needs to have a minimum of one blank page

If the passport expires within 6 months and/or does not have any blank pages left, American passengers should obtain a new US passport before applying for the Rwanda eVisa.

Once all of these requirements are met, American nationals can move on to the next step: applying for a Rwanda electronic visa.

How to Apply for the Rwanda eVisa for American Citizens

American citizens can obtain their Rwanda eVisa by filling out the online application form.

There are only a handful of steps to go through, and applicants from the United States can expect to spend about 15 minutes on the entire process.

Step 1: To fill out the form and answer some basic questions about the American applicant, their passport information, and their contact details.

Citizens of the United States applying for a Rwanda eVisa are advised to think about which date they plan to travel to Rwanda, as well as how they will enter the country. This is because the eVisa form has a question regarding the applicant’s expected date of arrival.

Likewise, Americans are able to enter Rwanda via the Kigali International Airport or through any land border.

Step 2: To upload a photo of the American passport’s biometric page. Please ensure that this scanned image is legible and clear.

Step 3: To pay the eVisa fee. Before submitting the form for consideration, it is recommended that Americans read through the answers one final time and correct any mistakes or typos. This is very important, because the Rwanda eVisa for the US may be rejected if there are inconsistencies or errors on the application.

Traveling to Rwanda With an eVisa From the USA

Applicants from the United States can expect to receive their approved Rwanda eVisa within 3 business days after submitting the online form.

US citizens are eligible to use their approved eVisa to enter Rwanda within 30 days after issuance. If holders do not use their online visa to access the country within this time period, they will need to apply for a new one.

When entering the country, it is recommended for American travelers to have a copy of their approved Rwanda eVisa on hand. Visitors from the US will need to show it to the immigration official when crossing the border, alongside the passport that was used for the application.
