Indian citizens can now apply for a Russian eVisa without having to visit an embassy or consulate.

Although Russia was known for having a strict visa policy for many years, the country introduced an eVisa system in 2017. This greatly simplified the process and made it much easier for nationals of more than 50 countries to enter Russia, including Indians.

Do I Need a Visa for Russia From India?

One of the most common questions is, “Do Indian citizens need a visa to visit Russia?”.

Yes. The visa policy of Russia requires all non-exempt foreign nationals (including Indians) to obtain a travel authorization before they can enter the country.

Indian citizens can take advantage of the Russian eVisa program. This option is much faster and easier than the typical process of visiting a Russian embassy in person and applying for a traditional visa.

What Are the Benefits of the Russian eVisa For Indians?

There are many benefits of applying for the Russian eVisa:

Indians may travel to Russia under the eVisa program for the purposes of tourism, business, or humanitarian projects (i.e. to participate in scientific, cultural, socio-political, economic, or sporting events).

Likewise, the Russian eVisa is a single-entry authorization that allows Indians to stay in the country for up to 8 days.

It is valid for 30 days from the date of approval, which is convenient for Indians who are unsure of their travel dates.

What Russian eVisa Options Are Available For Indians?

The Russian government created regional visas to simplify the program and make it easier for Indian travelers to choose.

There are three different Russian region eVisas available for Indian visitors: St. Petersburg and Leningrad; Kaliningrad Oblast; and the Far East Territories.

However, nationals of India should keep in mind that a Russia-wide eVisa is expected to be implemented in the upcoming months. This Unified Russia eVisa allows Indian citizens to travel within the entire territory of Russia, rather than needing to apply for individual regions.

How do Russia’s regional visas work for citizens of India?

It is important to note that the Indian individuals will only be allowed to travel to the region(s) that they specifically applied for.

For example, if the applicant only has an eVisa to the Far East, they will not be able to travel to Kaliningrad unless they apply for the Kaliningrad Oblast eVisa as well.

Visitors of India who wish to see more of Russia can apply for the Far East eVisa, which grants access to 8 regions in the Far East. These include the following:

  • Amur Region
  • Chukotka Autonomous Okrug
  • Kamchatka Krai
  • Khabarovsk Krai
  • Primorsky Krai
  • Republic of Buryatia
  • Sakhalin Oblast
  • Zabaykalsky Krai

On the other hand, Leningrad Oblast is known as the location of Russia’s second-biggest city, St. Petersburg, while Kaliningrad is a unique semi-exclave situated on the Baltic coast.

Documents Required for the Russia Online Visa for Indian Citizens

Unlike traditional visas, which typically ask applicants to have a tourist invitation or hotel bookings, there are only a few Russian electronic visa requirements for Indian citizens.

They include the following items:

  • A valid, India-issued passport that has a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of arrival in Russia. This passport must have at least one blank page.
  • A current email address, where the approved eVisa will be sent to.
  • A photograph of the applicant, which must have been taken within the last 6 months. This photo must be passport-sized, clear, and have the applicant set against a white background.
  • A valid form of payment, such as a debit or credit card, to pay the processing fees.

Once these requirements are met, Indian nationals can apply for their eVisa.

Russia eVisa Application for Citizens of India

Indian citizens who wish to obtain a Russian eVisa can start the process by completing the online application form.

This form will ask for the applicant’s:

  • Personal information (first and last name, gender, date of birth)
  • Passport data (serial number, nationality, issue/expiration date)
  • Contact information (phone number, email address).

The process is very straightforward and takes most applicants from India less than 30 minutes to complete.

However, it is important to ensure that the Indian applicant has thoroughly double-checked their answers before submitting the form. This is because the Russian government can delay or deny the eVisa if there are errors or typos on the application.

Processing Time For The Russian eVisa from India

Indian applicants can expect to receive a decision within 2 to 4 business days.

Since the Russian eVisa is valid for 30 days after approval, it is recommended that Indian citizens apply for the eVisa ahead of time. This is because national holidays, weekends, and a high volume of applications may affect the processing time, which may be greater than 4 business days.

The approved Russian eVisa will be sent to the email address that the Indian traveler noted on their application form.
