Russian E-visa Requirements for Citizens of China

Electronic Travel Authorization Available

The Russian E-visa for Chinese citizens is an electronic visa that allows nationals of China to visit certain regions within the Russian Federation.

The E-visa affords Chinese travelers the convenience of applying for a Russian visa online. It is a single-entry visa that allows short visits for the purposes of tourism, business or humanitarian missions. In addition to Chinese passport holders, the E-visa for Russia is available to citizens of about 55 countries around the world.

Russia’s visa policy requires all foreign nationals (except those from visa exempt countries) to obtain a Russian visa prior to their arrival in the country. Travelers from China can apply for a Russian E-visa online for a number of regions of Russia. To visit other parts of the country, it is necessary to apply for a Russian visa through a Russian embassy or consulate.

Types of Russia E-visas for Chinese Citizens

Citizens of the People’s Republic of China are eligible to apply for the Russian E-visa. There are 3 types of Russian E-visas available to Chinese citizens depending on the region they are interested in visiting:

  • St. Petersburg and Leningrad E-visa
  • Kaliningrad E-visa
  • Russian Far-East E-visa

It is important to note that each type of Russian E-visa for Chinese nationals is region-specific, and can only be used to enter the specified part of Russia.

If a citizen of China wanted to visit both St. Petersburg and the Russian Far East, for example, they would need to apply for both of the relevant E-visas. They would also have to fly between these locations, since the E-visas do not permit them to travel by land through areas of Russian territory not covered by the visas.

In order to visit other parts of Russia, Chinese nationals must apply for the relevant visa at a Russian embassy or consulate. Only visas for St. Petersburg/Leningrad, Kaliningrad, and the Russian Far East can be obtained online.

Furthermore, there are certain designated ports of entry for each region through which Chinese travelers with a Russian E-visa are required to enter and depart from the country.

Russian E-visa Requirements for Citizens of China

Chinese citizens interested in traveling to Russia must fulfill three basic requirements, regardless of the type of Russian E-visa they are applying for. All Chinese citizens should have the following items to complete their application:

  • A valid passport issued by the People’s Republic of China with an expiration date that extends at least 6 months from the date of arrival in Russia
  • An email address to which notifications about the traveler’s application and the approved Russian E-visa can be delivered.
  • A recent passport-sized photograph of the traveler, against a white background

Currently, the Russian Federation does not require Chinese travelers to submit additional supporting documentation when applying for a Russian E-visa, unlike with embassy or consular visas.

How Long Can Chinese Nationals Stay in Russia on an E-visa?

The Russian E-visa allows Chinese travelers a maximum stay of 8 days in Russia starting from the day they arrived in the country, regardless of the exact time of their arrival.

Nationals of the People’s Republic of China are free to travel within the specific region they are visiting with the relevant type of Russia E-visa; however, travelers should plan their departure before 11:59pm on the eighth day to avoid overstaying their visa.

How to Apply for a Russian E-visa from China

Chinese travelers can apply for the Russian E-visa by filling out an online application with their personal and passport details.

It is important to ensure that there are no mistakes before submitting the application as errors can complicate the application process. Inconsistencies between the details submitted on the form and those on the Chinese passport can lead to the application being rejected or entry to Russia denied at the border. Applicants should double-check all their answers.

Chinese travelers are also encouraged to plan ahead and apply for the Russian E-visa at least 7 days before their intended date of travel to Russia to account for any processing delays that may occur. It is worth noting that the Russian E-visa is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued to the traveler.

When Will I Receive My Russian E-visa for Chinese Citizens?

Typically, travelers who submit an application for the Russian E-visa receive their approved visa within 2-4 business days. However, national holidays, weekends, high volumes of applications, and other factors can sometimes affect how long it takes the traveler to receive their Russian E-visa.

Visitors from the PRC will receive a decision on their application via email.

Chinese nationals who have been approved for the Russian E-visa will have to take a printed copy of the Russian E-visa with them when they travel as it will be required for entry into Russia.
