The government of Laos has announced the introduction of a new electronic visa system which will make it easier for eligible foreign citizens to obtain a tourist visa for the country. After a long period of preparation, the Laos eVisa was finally launched on the 9th of July, 2019 and is now available through an online application process.
The Laos eVisa is a single entry online visa which will allow eligible travelers to visit the country for periods of up to 30 consecutive days for purposes of tourism. It will be valid for 30 days to enter Laos from the date of approval.
Eligible applicants from 180 countries, including citizens of the United States, Australia, and all European Union countries, will now be able to complete a simple online application in just a few minutes to receive an approved Laos eVisa within 3 working days. Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Venezuela as well as other Asian countries such as India, China, Japan or Sri Lanka are among the complete list of eligible countries.

To complete the Laos eVisa form, applicants will be required to fill in information such as their name, date of birth, passport details, and travel plans, and pay a small visa fee in order to submit the application. Once an application has been successfully processed, the approved Laos Tourist eVisa will be electronically sent to the traveler, who will then be able to enter Laos by presenting their eVisa and their passport on arrival.
A new step toward boosting tourism in Laos
Soun Manivong, the Director General of the Tourism Marketing Department of the Ministry of Information Culture and Tourism in Laos, announced the news and reaffirmed his belief that the new eVisa would greatly help to boost tourism in Laos.
Previously, non-visa-waiver visitors to Laos had to apply for a visa in person from a Laos embassy or consulate or obtain a visa on arrival at a border checkpoint in order to enter the country. However, both processes were time-consuming and involved having to wait in long queues and complete significant amounts of paperwork.
Obtaining a visa for Laos was previously made even more difficult by the fact that many applicants did not have a Lao embassy or consulate located in their country of residence, or within a reasonable distance, and had to travel to nearby countries to apply for a visa for Laos.
Furthermore, many foreign citizens eligible to obtain a Laos visa on arrival at border checkpoints were not even aware that this function was available to them. The government is hoping that the introduction of the eVisa for Laos will help to solve some of these problems, as it will be possible to submit an eVisa application online from anywhere in the world before traveling to the country.
The country is following the lead of fellow Southeast Asia nations such as Thailand and Myanmar, which have both introduced electronic visa processes in recent years, and is hoping for the same level of success in boosting tourism numbers. Although the country welcomed more than 4.1 million visitors in 2018, the government is hoping the new eVisa system will help them reach their target of 5 million tourists in 2019.
