Australians who wish to travel to Myanmar must know that they are eligible to apply for the Myanmar eVisa.

The electronic visa program was introduced in September 2014 by the Burmese government. This change allowed Australians and other eligible nationals to simplify the process of getting a visa to enter Myanmar.

Should Australians Get a Visa to Visit Myanmar?

All Australian citizens must get a visa before entering Myanmar territory. Fortunately, the process is quite straightforward and simple through the electronic visa application, in cases in which citizens of Australia must travel for tourism or business purposes.

If nationals of Australia are traveling to Myanmar for leisure, they should apply for a Myanmar tourist eVisa, which is a single-entry travel permit that allows holders to stay in the country for up to 28 days.

In the case of business visits, Australian passport holders can choose the Myanmar business eVisa, which has a longer maximum stay — up to 70 days — and is a single-entry visa as well.

Both options are valid to Australian visitors for up to 3 months from the date of issue.

For other purposes, such as working, studying, or residing in Myanmar, Australian citizens should contact their nearest Myanmar embassy or consulate.

Benefits of the Myanmar eVisa for Australians

One of the main advantages of the Myanmar eVisa is that allows over 100 country nationals, including Australian citizens, to visit the country without having to previously visit a diplomatic mission.

Another benefit of the online visa to Myanmar is that allows nationals of Australia to choose from 2 different visa options, depending on their travel circumstances: business or tourism.

Regarding the actual visa application, visitors from Australia must note that the process is quite simple and does not take more than 15 minutes to complete.

Myanmar eVisa Requirements for Australian visitors

Before applying for the Myanmar eVisa, citizens of Australia are encouraged to collect some necessary documents stated in the Myanmar visa policy. These include the following:

  • The applicant’s Australian passport, which should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of applying
  • A recent passport-style photo of the applicant. This must be a colored photograph that was taken within the past 6 months, against a white background and with a neutral expression
  • A valid form of payment, such as a credit or debit card, will be used to pay the Myanmar eVisa processing fee
  • An email address to receive the approved Myanmar eVisa.

They also must provide truthful, accurate answers throughout the application process.

Conditions to enter Myanmar from Australia

Besides the requirements listed above, travelers from Australia are also asked to present supporting documents when entering Myanmar.

The most important document is the printed copy of the Myanmar eVisa approval letter, which must match the name and passport details of the Australian citizen who plans to enter the country.

Likewise, Australians may be asked to present confirmation of their accommodation details (such as hotel reservations or hostel vouchers); proof of onward journey (either back home or to their next country); and/or proof of sufficient finances to fund their stay in Myanmar.

Visitors are encouraged to read the general visa requirements for Australians when traveling abroad.

How to Apply for the Myanmar eVisa as an Australian

Once applicants holding an Australian passport have gathered all of the necessary paperwork, they can apply for the Myanmar eVisa.

This is done through the Myanmar eVisa online application, which can be accessed from any internet-enabled device and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

The application will ask for the Australian traveler’s personal details, including:

  • First and last name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender

There will also be a section with questions regarding the Australians’ passport details (serial number, issue, and expiry date, nationality) as well as their contact information.

The next step is choosing between the tourist visa or the business visa.

Finally, Australian nationals must pay the processing fee using a valid debit or credit card with sufficient funds.

Most Myanmar eVisas are processed for Australian nationals within 24 hours after submission. However, in rare cases, it may take up to 3 business days to receive the Myanmar eVisa approval letter.

Myanmar’s valid ports of entry as Australian visitor

During the application process, travelers from Australia are asked to mention the intended point of entry into Myanmar.

At the moment, these are the eligible points of entry into Myanmar:

  • Air: Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport, Nay Pyi Taw International Airport
  • Land: Tachileik, Myawaddy, Kawthaung, Tamu, Rih Khaw Dar checkpoints

Please note that travelers, including Australians, cannot use their Myanmar eVisa to enter the country via any seaport.
