American citizens who wish to travel to Myanmar must apply for an electronic visa. Thankfully, the process is quick and easy — read on to learn more about the eVisa, the requirements, and how to apply.

Travelers from the United States were the fifth-most popular tourists visiting Myanmar in the last few years thanks to its expanding reputation.

What is the Myanmar eVisa for US Citizens?

The Myanmar eVisa, which was introduced in 2014 by the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, is a simplified entry visa that is available to citizens of more than 100 countries (including American nationals).

The Myanmar eVisa comes in two variants: the tourist eVisa and the business eVisa.

Myanmar tourist visa for Americans

Applicants from the US who are planning to enter Myanmar for tourism-related purposes should apply for the Myanmar tourist eVisa. With this type of eVisa, which is a single-entry document, American travelers can spend up to 28 days exploring Myanmar.

It is valid for up to 3 months from the date of approval, which is especially convenient for Americans who have not yet bought their tickets or planned their trip.

Myanmar business visa for US citizens

The business eVisa was designed for American visitors who wish to do business in Myanmar, such as visiting a regional office, holding meetings, or signing important contracts with clients.

Since business-related activities can drag on for weeks (or even months), the Myanmar business eVisa allows individuals from the United States to stay in the country for up to 70 days. Just like the tourist eVisa, the business eVisa is also valid for up to 3 months after approval.

Unlike the tourist eVisa, however, the business eVisa requires some additional paperwork. Before US applicants can apply for their business eVisa, they are required to obtain an official letter of invitation from the company that is sponsoring their stay. This company must have been registered in Myanmar for a minimum of 3 years in order to do so.

Allowed Ports of Entry With a Myanmar Online Visa as an American

The Myanmar business and tourist eVisas can be used by US citizens to enter Myanmar at these ports:

  • Air ports: Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport, Nay Pyi Taw International Airport
  • Land ports: Tachileik, Myawaddy, Kawthaung, Tamu, Rih Khaw Dar land border checkpoints
  • Seaports: At the moment, travelers who are arriving in Myanmar via a seaport (such as through a cruise) cannot do so with an eVisa. For further information, please contact your nearest Myanmar embassy.

Myanmar eVisa Application Process for Americans

Citizens of the United States of America can apply for their Myanmar eVisa online. The process is quick, convenient, and only takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

The only requirement to access the Myanmar eVisa application form is a device with a stable internet connection, such as a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Myanmar eVisa requirements for US citizens

Before applying for a Myanmar eVisa, American citizens must have the following required documents, according to Myanmar’s visa policy:

  • A current passport issued by the United States of America that is valid for a minimum of 6 months after applying
  • A valid email address. This is where the approved Myanmar eVisa will be sent to
  • A recent passport-sized photo of the applicant
  • A valid credit or debit card to pay to Myanmar eVisa processing fees

Applicants from the US are also required to provide additional documentation, such as proof of sufficient funds, confirmation of accommodations (i.e. hotels, hostels, apartments, etc), and proof of travel to an onward destination.

Once American applicants have gathered the required documents mentioned above and met the general visa requirements for US travelers, they are ready to take the next step and apply for a Myanmar eVisa.

How to Apply for a Myanmar eVisa as an American

The application process for American citizens to obtain a Myanmar eVisa is very convenient and straightforward. Applicants from the United States must enter details about themselves and their passports in the relevant fields. This includes the following questions:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Email address
  • Passport number
  • Passport issue and expiry date

There will also be a section to upload the US applicant’s photograph and answer questions regarding their itinerary.

Visiting Myanmar from the US with an ASEAN visa

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (also known as ASEAN), which has 10 member countries, will soon launch the new ASEAN visa program.

This means that US citizens who wish to visit multiple member countries in the region can do so with a single visa.

The program is especially convenient, as Americans would not need to apply for individual visas to every single country. Besides Myanmar, the other 9 participating countries include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Although the ASEAN visa has not officially launched yet, it is currently in the works and more details are expected soon.
