The Mexico Tourist Card for Citizens of Canada

  • Simplified Application Form
  • Expert Application Review
  • Approved visa or money back

The Mexican government launched the Forma Migratoria Múltiple, also known as the Mexico Tourist Card, to ease up obtaining a valid travel permit to visit the country for short-term visits. We must remind you the Mexican Tourist Card is not a visa. It is a mandatory form that international visitors, including Canadian nationals, must have granted to enter the country.

The Mexican visa policy defines the rules and regulations international travelers must abide by to enter Mexico. Canadians are exempt from needing a visa if they travel to Mexico for any of the following reasons, and their permanence will not exceed 6 months:

  • Tourism and leisure
  • Business meetings
  • Sports competitions
  • Cultural events

Additionally, Canadian professionals such as airline staff, who need to stay in Mexico for brief amounts of time, can also opt for a Transit FMM. This travel permit can only be used to enter Mexico by air and grants a stay of a week.

The Mexican Tourist Card allows Canadian passport holders a single-entry in Mexico. If they must momentarily visit a neighboring country in the middle of their stay, they must re-enter with a new FMM approved.

What Are the Requirements for the FMM for Canadians?

Canadian travelers are amongst the top nationalities in global tourism. Before traveling to any destination, we recommend reading the visa conditions for Canadian citizens. The Mexican authorities publish the requirements they must meet to obtain the Forma Migratoria Múltiple. The most basic conditions for the FMM include the following:

  • Possess a Canadian passport valid for 180 days on their intended arrival
  • Use a frequently accessed email address to register their application
  • Provide a bank card to pay the FMM fee

Applicants need to comply with the mandatory requirement of 180 days (6 months) of their passport’s validity on the date they plan to enter Mexico. If they see their passport will expire within 6 months of this date, we request they submit it for renewal with their local authorities at their earliest convenience.

The issuing of the FMM is 100% online. Therefore it is best you check the debit or credit card they will use to pay the processing fee is activated for online transactions. We also remind Canadian citizens to check they request their Mexican Tourist Card with an email address they regularly use.

Canadian nationals who plan to travel to Mexico for other purposes such as a long-term relocation or wish to stay for over 6 months must note the FMM in their case does not apply.

In these situations, we recommend contacting the Mexican embassy in Ottawa for visa options that might be more suitable for their needs. They can also schedule an appointment at a consular office in major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal if they prefer.

Application Process for the Mexico Tourist Card from Canada

Canadian travelers who confirm they meet the requirements for the FMM can initiate their petition. The form is an online questionnaire with standard questions for international travel that Canadians can complete within 30 minutes.

Citizens from Canada will be required to share some personal information and their desired length of stay. Some of the basic questions include the following:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Residential address
  • Email address
  • Gender
  • Port of entry
  • FMM duration (7 days or 180 days)

Canadians must also share some passport details such as passport number, issuing country, and expiration date. They must check the information they are providing in this section matches their passport. Any mismatch or spelling error could delay their evaluation or lead to a denial.

Any visiting party from Canada in Mexico with underage travelers, such as a family holiday with children, must note that each arrival must reach Mexico with an approved Mexican Tourist Card. Canadian citizens can fill in their children’s applications without any problems using the same email address and payment method.

Canadian petitioners conclude their FMM request by paying the processing fee. Most international debit and credit cards are accepted, and the payment is issued by a secure online platform.

Evaluation process for the FMM for Canadian nationals

Once Canadian citizens submit their Tourist Card request, it is analyzed, and within a few hours, they should receive a resolution to their petition. If they meet the requirements and have filled in the application form correctly, they should receive an approved Forma Migratoria Múltiple in a confirmation email.

Traveling to Mexico from Canada on the Mexico Tourist Card

Before departing Canadian visitors will have to print out a copy of their approved Forma Migratoria Múltiple and keep it next to their travel documents. The FMM consists of 2 slips of paper.

Upon reaching a Mexican border crossing (arrivals in any international airport or highway checkpoints), we recommend arrivals from Canada head straight to the queues for “Forma Migratoria Múltiple Holders” to save time. They will have to submit the first slip of paper to the Mexican authorities, who will stamp the second slip and hand it over to them.

Canadians are requested to keep the second slip with themselves during their stay in Mexico. This document includes the validity of their FMM and the required departure date. Visitors are obliged to abide by this date and not overstay their visit to Mexico. Upon departing, they will provide this slip of paper to confirm they have complied with the authorized dates during their visit.
