The online nature of the India e-Visa means that US citizens can acquire permission to travel to the South Asian country from the comfort of their own home.

There are 4 types of India e-Visa for nationals of the USA:

  • Tourist e-Visa
  • Business e-Visa
  • e-Medical Patient Visa
  • e-Medical Companion of Patient Visa

Americans planning to visit India must apply for the type of India e-Visa that matches the purpose of their trip.

India Tourist e-Visa for US citizens

Americans planning a holiday in India should apply for the Tourist e-Visa. This allows visitors from the US to stay in the country for the purposes of tourism and leisure.

The Indian Tourist e-Visa for Americans is valid for a full year starting from the date on which it is granted.

It allows US citizens to enter India multiple times within this period.

Visitors from the USA may stay in India for up to 90 days at a time.

India Business e-Visa for Americans

US nationals going on a business trip to India must obtain a Business e-Visa. This type of electronic visa is also required for other business-related activities.

Like the tourist option, the Indian Business e-Visa for US citizens is valid for one year and allows multiple visits.

On each visit, Americans can stay for up to 180 days.

India Medical e-Visas for US travelers

Americans seeking medical treatment in India can apply online for an e-Medical Patient Visa.

They are permitted to have up to 2 people accompany them as long as they are citizens of the US or another eligible country. These individuals must have an India e-Medical Companion of Patient Visa.

Both of these types of India Medical e-Visa for Americans have the same terms.

They are valid for 120 days and allow 3 entries to India for the patient and their companion(s). After the first entry, the other visits must occur within 60 days.

Each visit can last for a maximum of 60 days.

How Do US Citizens Get an Indian e-Visa?

Citizens of the United States can get an e-Visa for India by completing a quick online form. This questionnaire asks for some basic information and supporting documents from American travelers.

US nationals must enter some personal details, including the following:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality

They must provide the details of their valid US passport, including:

  • Passport number
  • Date of issue
  • Date of expiry

Contact details, including an email address, must be provided. The American applicant will receive updates on the progress of their application by email. Moreover, the India e-Visa itself will be sent to the account provided when it is approved.

What documents do Americans need to apply for an Indian e-Visa?

In order to apply for an e-Visa for India, Americans must have a valid US passport. The expiry date must be at 6 months after the date on which they plan to arrive.

The following digital documents must be uploaded with the India e-Visa application:

  • Scan of US passport bio page
  • Recent passport-style photo of the American citizen
  • Business card of host company in India (Business e-Visa only)
  • Invitation letter from hospital/medical center in India (Medical e-Visa only).

Other essential items for an Indian e-Visa application for US citizens include the following:

  • Email address so that American visitors can receive their entry permit
  • Credit or debit card to cover the e-Visa processing fee.

Can US citizens get a visa on arrival in India?

No, there is no visa on arrival option for American citizens traveling to India. US passport holders must instead apply online for the relevant type of e-Visa.

Only nationals of a select few countries can get a visa on arrival for India. The United States of America is not one of them.

Even dual citizens who are eligible are advised to apply for the e-Visa using their US passport instead. This is because applying online in advance avoids the traveler having to spend time waiting in line at the Indian border to apply for the visa on arrival.
