Ethiopia eVisa Requirements for Citizens of Canada

  • Simplified Application Form
  • Expert Application Review
  • Approved visa or money back

Canadian nationals planning on visiting Ethiopia must have the Ethiopia eVisa to enter the country, regardless of the period of expected stay or the intended purpose of travel.

Visas are available for different types of travel. In 2017, Ethiopia introduced the eVisa, an electronic tourist visa available for travelers from 230 countries, including Canada.

This means that any Canadian passport holder traveling to Ethiopia for tourism can follow the Ethiopian eVisa requirements for Canadians and submit an application online.

Thanks to this new electronic visa system, it has never been easier or quicker to apply for an Ethiopian visa from Canada.

The Ethiopia eVisa grants entry to Ethiopia for Canadian nationals for purposes of tourism only. Canadian citizens who plan to travel to Ethiopia for reasons other than tourism, such as business, study or work, or medical care, can read further the Ethiopia eVisa policies and find if an alternative visa suits them more.

How Can I Apply for an Ethiopia eVisa is a Canadian Citizen?

Applying for an Ethiopia eVisa from Canada is simple and takes just a few minutes. The entire process takes place online, removing the need to wait in lengthy queues for a visa at the nearest embassy or on Ethiopia’s arrival. Canadians will be required to fill out the form and submit it for approval before traveling.

The Ethiopia eVisa will authorize the Canadian passport holders a single entry to the country for either 30 or 90 days, depending on what they choose when applying. Single entry means that if tourists from Canada leave Ethiopia temporarily and wish to return to continue with their holidays, they will have to reapply for a new eVisa.

Canadian families traveling with minors are required to apply for a separate eVisa for each member. The parent or guardian can use the same email address for every application.

If Canadians plan to visit Ethiopia for a more extended period or a different motive, they should contact the Ethiopian embassy in Ottawa.

Documents Required for an Ethiopia eVisa for Candians

Those applying for an Ethiopia eVisa need to carefully read the following information to ensure they have the correct documentation and meet all Canadian passport holders’ requirements.

Canadian citizens will have to fill in the application with the care needed to make sure there are no mistakes on the form, including typos. Any errors or information wrongly introduced can delay the processing or rejection of the Ethiopia eVisa.
Essential items and information required when applying include:

  • A current, up-to-date Canadian passport. Please check it has at least 6 months’ validity from the dates they plan to arrive. If it does not, they will need to renew it before applying for the Ethiopia eVisa.
  • A passport-style photograph of the applicant.
  • A digital image of the biographical page of the applicant’s passport
  • A valid visa or debit card to pay the Ethiopia eVisa processing fee
  • An email address. Canadian citizens should confirm it is an address they regularly check, as any updates to their application and the final Ethiopia eVisa itself, will be sent to that address.

Canadians will also be required to answer some personal questions and travel plans to Ethiopia, including dates and flight information.

How Do I Receive My Ethiopia eVisa as a Canadian?

Once the Canadian citizen has submitted the application form for the Ethiopia eVisa, the information is processed quickly. All in all, the process usually takes a few business days. The evaluation can sometimes take longer during busy periods. We recommend applying with plenty of time before the intended travel dates to Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian government will send the approved Ethiopia eVisa to the Canadian applicant at the email they registered with. The eVisa is linked electronically to their Canadian passport. Canadians with dual nationalities should apply with the same passport they will use when traveling to Ethiopia. Please bear in mind that the eVisa is a unique visa authorization and not transferable.

Ethiopian authorities recommend that Canadian tourists store a copy of the eVisa on their smartphone or print out a copy to take with them if border officials request inspection upon arrival in Ethiopia.

Travel to Ethiopia From Canada

The Ethiopia visa policy states that the tourist eVisa for Canadian travelers permits entry to the country via air only. The Ethiopia eVisa does not grant access to the country by other means of transport, such as by road or rail. eVisa holders are required to book their flights to Bole International Airport in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Canadian citizens who have had their passport misplaced or stolen before traveling to Ethiopia should reapply as soon as possible for a new eVisa. As mentioned above, the eVisa is automatically linked to one individual passport. If they arrive in Ethiopia with a recent passport not linked to the eVisa, travelers from Canada will not be allowed entry.
