The US ESTA is a simplified visa waiver for citizens of more than 35 countries, including Sweden. Travelers can apply for the ESTA online in under 15 minutes, have it delivered to an email address, and enjoy a convenient and stress-free experience.

By requesting a US ESTA, applicants do not need to visit an American embassy, submit documents through the mail, or have an interview with an immigration officer. The entire process can be completed from the comfort of the traveler’s home.

If you are a Swedish citizen who would like to apply for the US ESTA, our guide will show you the requirements, application steps, and benefits of the ESTA.

What Is the ESTA for Swedes and What Does It Do?

In 2009, the US government introduced the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) as part of their Visa Waiver Program. The United States’ visa policy details the conditions international travelers must meet according to their citizenship before requesting the most suitable travel authorization.

The ESTA is valid for 2 years from the date of issue and allows Swedish citizens to stay in the United States for up to 90 days at a time.

The ESTA is a multiple-entry visa waiver, which means that travelers may enter and exit the country as many times as they wish as long as it is within the allotted period.

Travelers may use the ESTA to enter the country for a variety of purposes. They include the following:

  • Tourism: leisure, relaxation, cultural activities as well as visiting family and friends
  • Business: attending conferences and business meetings
  • Transit: transiting through the US to a final destination

Swedes must take into account that if they are thinking of traveling to the United States for long-term studies or seeking full-time employment then the ESTA does not authorize these activities. rIn this case, it is necessary to schedule an appointment with the American embassy in Stockholm for further details.

What Are the Requirements to Obtain a US ESTA for Swedish Travelers?

Applying for the US ESTA is quick and easy. Swedish nationals must confirm they meet the requirements for international travel to proceed. These are detailed below:

  • A Swedish passport, which must be valid between the date of arrival and departure in the United States
  • A debit or credit card to pay the processing fee
  • A valid email address to receive the approved ESTA

Swedish citizens must ensure their passport is valid during their stay in the United States. The American government elaborated a list of countries whose citizens are exempt from having a passport valid for six months or more called the Six-Month Club. Sweden is part of this club, and its nationals traveling to the US simply need to check their passports will be valid throughout their stay in America.

Additionally, they must confirm the card they will use to pay the ESTA processing fee is activated for international transactions. Finally, they must ensure the email id they use to apply is one they regularly use. The American government will issue the approved ESTA to Swedish applicants by email only.

Swedes with dual citizenship should remember that the ESTA is electronically linked to the passport originally used in the application form. They must ensure they will travel with the same passport as the one used to request the ESTA.

Likewise, if their passport is stolen or misplaced after applying for the ESTA, but before their visit to the United States, then they must reapply for a new ESTA. The Electronic System for Travel Authorization is a unique travel authorization that cannot be transferred to a second document.

How to Request a US ESTA for Swedish Citizens

To obtain an ESTA, Swedish travelers will need to complete the online application form. The form is a simple questionnaire where they will submit the following personal and passport information:

  • Full name
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Country of birth
  • Personal address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Emergency contact
  • Passport number
  • Passport issuance date
  • Passport expiry date
  • Occupation

Additionally, Swedes will proceed to provide the following security and health-related information:

  • Security background
  • Medical history
  • Details about any previous visits to the United States

Likewise, we advise that all Swedish applicants go through their answers and ensure that all the information entered is correct and accurate. Any errors can lead to a delay in processing the US ESTA or even a rejection.

Do Swedish underage travelers need the ESTA?

Swedish families planning a joint visit to the US with minors must request individual applications for the US ESTA for each member. Parents or guardians can fill in the application on their behalf and use the same email address naturally.

USA ESTA processing fee payment by Swedish applicants

Once Swedish passport holders confirm they have submitted all the required answers correctly, they will finalize the process by paying the ESTA fee. As mentioned previously, they must ensure the card they plan to use has been previously authorized for online transactions and carries sufficient funds to cover the price.

How long does it take to process the US ESTA from Sweden?

Once Swedish applicants have completed their ESTA requests, the United States Department of Homeland Security inspects them. The evaluation process takes between 24 and 72 hours. We advise all travelers to apply for the ESTA at least 3 days before their scheduled trip to account for possible delays.

How Is the US ESTA Sent to Swedish Travelers?

As soon as the American authorities have evaluated the forms received by the Swedish citizens, they will issue the approved ESTAs to each applicant to the email address they used during the registration process.

The approved electronic travel authorizations will be included as an attached PDF in a confirmation email.

As a side note, Swedish nationals must note the ESTA is electronically linked to their passport. They are not required to print out a copy to present at passport control once they reach the US.

Can Swedes extend their stay with the US ESTA?

Swedish visitors must abide by the terms of their ESTA and plan their entry and exit flights within the authorized 90 days. Nevertheless, if, for any reason, they want to stay for a longer period, they can renew the American ESTA.

It is important to note that the ESTA is not renewable on US soil. To complete the renewal, they must temporarily leave the United States, request the renewal, and once granted, re-enter the country.
