The government of Egypt introduced the Egyptian e-Visa (an Electronic Visa) in 2017. It grants entry to citizens of selected nationalities, including French citizens, to visit Egypt by completing an online visa application.

The Egyptian visa policy determines the main features and requirements for the e-Visa. It is valid for 90 days (3 months) for French nationals to enter Egypt from the date of issuance. Foreign visitors can either select a single or multiple entry e-Visa.

Citizens who select the single entry e-Visa will be granted a stay of 30 days. In contrast, those who choose the multiple-entry e-Visa will be able to enter and depart from Egypt as often as they need during 6 months, provided none of their visits exceeds one full month. Lastly, foreign travelers must note they can only use this online visa for tourism purposes.

Requirements for the Egyptian e-Visa for French Nationals

French passport holders are eligible to obtain the Egyptian e-Visa. Before proceeding to the application form, we recommend they first read through the French citizens’ international travel requirements. The main conditions for the Egyptian e-Visa are listed below:

  • Have a French passport valid for at least 6 months on the intended arrival date
  • Provide a frequently used email address
  • Use a debit or credit card
  • Supply proof of accommodation in Egypt
Submit a digital photo of the applicant (passport-style)
  • Have a digital image of the passport’s biographical page

French nationals who have a passport that will expire in less than six months on the date they intend to visit Egypt must first renew it before submitting their e-Visa form. They should also upload digital copies of their passport’s biographical page and a recent id photo.

The e-Visa is a unique online visa and will be automatically linked to the holders’ passports. It is not transferable to a second travel document. This is especially important for French citizens with dual nationality or who are planning to renew their passport after requesting the e-Visa.

We recommend they apply with a frequently used email address. The Egyptian government will issue all communications plus the approved e-Visa via email. French travelers must also confirm their accommodation details in Egypt during the application process.

Lastly, since the payment of the e-Visa will be made electronically, French applicants are recommended to check their cards have been previously activated for online payments.

French passport holders who wish to travel to Egypt for longer periods of time and purposes other than touristic visits such as job-seeking opportunities should schedule an appointment at the Egyptian embassy in Paris or Consulate in Marseille for further information.

How Should French Citizens Apply for the Egypt e-Visa?

The application form for the Egyptian e-Visa is simple and straightforward. It is a step-by-step process that French requesters must complete in one go. They will need to reply to specific personal questions and share information regarding their passport and travel itinerary:

  • Full name
  • Nationality
  • Passport issuance date
  • Passport expiry date
  • Email address
  • Current profession
  • Accommodation details
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Travel itinerary
  • Type of entry required

They will also have to upload digital images of the passport’s biographical page and ID photos. French travelers should provide all the necessary details accurately, taking care to ensure that all the information provided matches the information shown on their passport. Errors and missing information are usually the most common cause of processing delays and visa denials.

Do Underage French Citizens Need the e-Visa to visit Egypt?

Yes, French groups planning a family trip to Egypt with children should note that every visitor must arrive with their Egyptian e-Visa previously approved. Their parents are authorized to submit their application on their behalf and register their requests with the same email and payment cards.

Payment of the Egyptian e-Visa by French Applicants

French citizens conclude the application process by paying the e-Visa processing fee. The payment is carried out by a secure online system where most international cards are accepted. The Egyptian government then evaluates their request.

Evaluation Process of the Egyptian e-Visa

The evaluation takes up to 7 days, after which French applicants will receive their approved e-Visa in a confirmation email. Upon receipt of the online visa, we recommend printing out a copy and keeping it next to the rest of their travel documents.
Bearing in mind the evaluation process, we recommend French nationals submit their application at least 7 business days before their arrival. Once they receive the e-Visa, they can enter Egypt by air, road, or sea. They should simply confirm that both their arrival and departure tickets comply with the allowed dates of stay and e-Visa validity.

Traveling from France to Egypt on the Egypt e-Visa

French visitors must arrive with a printed copy of the e-Visa and display it at border control along with their passport to be authorized entry into the country.

Travelers from France must plan their return ticket for a date before the e-Visa expires; otherwise, they will be obliged to pay a fine for overstaying on departure. French visitors interested in extending their stay can apply for an extension at the Egyptian Immigration Office.

Can French Visitors Obtain the Visa on Arrival when they reach Egypt

Yes, French passport holders can request a visa on arrival once they reach Egypt. Nevertheless, they should note this entails queuing up at border controls, sometimes for a long period, before it can be issued. Additionally, it can only be used for a single entry. The e-Visa is a much more convenient and preferred option for French travelers.
