Canada eTA Requirements for Citizens of New Zealand

  • Simplified Application Form
  • Expert Application Review
  • Approved visa or money back

New Zealand passport holders are eligible to visit Canada without needing a traditional visa. To do so, they must apply for the Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online.

The Canadian government introduced this online visa waiver for citizens of selected countries (including New Zealand) in 2015 to facilitate international visits. It grants entry for tourism, business, or transit.

It is necessary to meet a few basic Canada eTA requirements for citizens of New Zealand.

What Is the Canada eTA for New Zealanders?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for Canada is an online visa waiver. Nationals of New Zealand can use it to visit the country instead of going to the trouble of getting a Canadian visa.

Travelers can apply for the Canada eTA for New Zealanders from the comfort of their own home or office. They simply need to fill in a quick online form using a computer or device connected to the internet. There is no need to go all the way to an embassy to deal with paperwork.

The application takes a matter of minutes. Confirmation of the approved Canadian eTA for citizens of New Zealand is delivered by email — usually within 24 hours and often much sooner.

This online travel permit is electronically linked to the New Zealand passport registered in the application.

The Canadian eTA is valid for 5 years. If the registered New Zealand passport expires sooner than this, the eTA will expire along with the passport. New Zealanders are allowed multiple entries in Canada during the validity period, with a maximum stay of 6 months each time.

Do New Zealand Citizens Need a Visa for Canada?

No, the Canadian visa policy states that New Zealanders do not need a visa to visit Canada as long as they have a valid eTA.

The Canada eTA for New Zealand citizens allows you to stay in Canada visa-free for up to 6 months for any of the following reasons:

  • Holidays
  • Staying with family
  • Leisure activities
  • Business activities
  • Transit en route to another destination

New Zealanders may require a Canadian visa for the following purposes:

  • Working in Canada
  • Moving to Canada
  • Studying in Canada
  • Spending more than 6 months

There are different Canada visa requirements for citizens of New Zealand depending on the traveler’s planned activities.

Requirements for the Canada eTA for New Zealanders

Applicants for the eTA must meet Canada’s visa requirements for New Zealand passport holders to ensure they meet international travel conditions. The following items are needed to apply:

  • Electronic New Zealand passport
  • Current email address
  • Debit or credit card to pay the processing fee

New Zealanders must confirm they possess an electronic passport (also referred to as a biometric passport). It must be valid for the duration of their stay in Canada. The biometric passport is a secure travel document that facilitates arrival in the country with quicker queues at border control.

The email address is a requirement because all updates about the New Zealander’s eTA application will be sent here — including confirmation that the travel authorization has been approved.

How Can New Zealanders Apply For the Canada eTA?

New Zealanders must fill in the simple Canadian eTA application form. This is a questionnaire that asks for the basic information detailed below and usually takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

  • Full name
  • Country of birth
  • Gender
  • Marital status
  • Profession
  • Email address
  • Passport number
  • Passport expiration date
  • Medical history

Other questions include details of their arrival and travel plans if they have already bought their airline tickets.

Do New Zealand Minors Need the eTA for Canada?

Yes, underage travelers from New Zealand also require an Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Canada. Their parents or legal guardians are authorized to submit their application on their behalf and use a joint email address for registration.

Payment of the Canadian eTA by New Zealand Applicants

Once New Zealand nationals have answered all the questions on the eTA application form, they finalize their request with the eTA processing fee payment. The Canadian government recommends all travelers thoroughly review their answers before actioning payment, since once completed, the answers on the eTA request cannot be amended.

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Canada eTA for New Zealanders?

The Canadian government evaluates all the eTA applications received and usually replies within 24 hours. Many applicants receive confirmation almost immediately.

Occasionally, it may take a little longer. During busy tourist seasons, the evaluation process could last up to 3 days. The Canadian authorities advise New Zealanders to apply at least 72 hours before their intended departure to account for any delays or evaluation issues.

Approved Canada eTAs are electronically linked to the traveler’s New Zealand’ passport and a confirmation email is sent to the account provided.

Traveling to Canada With the eTA From New Zealand

New Zealanders are authorized to depart for Canada once they receive their approved eTA. They must note that since the eTA is electronically linked to their passport, they are not obliged to print out a copy.

Travelers must ensure they travel to Canada with the same passport they used during their application process. This is especially important for New Zealanders with dual nationality and more than one passport.

If the original passport was misplaced or stolen between the moment the eTA was issued and the travel dates, you must apply for a new eTA, registering it to your new passport.

Travelers from New Zealand must simply submit their passports at the departure gates before boarding their flights. Once they reach Canada, their passports will be digitally scanned at border control before entering the country.

It is imperative to have an eTA granted before departing since airline staff will not allow New Zealand travelers to board their flights without it.

Canadian eTA Extension for Visitors from New Zealand

If New Zealanders wish to prolong their stay in Canada, they can apply for an extension of their eTA. The Canadian authorities require them to hand in an application 30 days before their current eTA expires. They usually expedite the eTA extensions in 24 hours.
