Canada eTA Requirements for Japanese Citizens

  • Simplified Application Form
  • Expert Application Review
  • Approved visa or money back

Japanese citizens are required to have a Canadian electronic travel authorization (eTA) to visit Canada. The eTA is easy to obtain by completing a quick online form.

Travelers with a Canada eTA for Japanese citizens are exempt from needing a Canadian visa. This means they can avoid the trouble of dealing with visa paperwork in person at an embassy or consulate.

Applicants must meet a few basic Canada eTA requirements for Japanese nationals.

Do Japanese People Need a Visa to Visit Canada?

No, Japanese nationals do not require a visa to visit Canada as long as they have an approved eTA.

The Canadian eTA for citizens of Japan allows visa-free visits of up to 6 months for the following purposes:

  • Leisure
  • Vacations
  • Family visits
  • Business
  • Transit

Unlike with a Canada visa, Japanese citizens can apply for an eTA online from the comfort of their own home. There is no need to go to a diplomatic mission to apply in person.

There is a short application form to complete and then the approved eTA will be electronically linked to the traveler’s Japanese passport.

A Canada visa for Japanese citizens is only necessary for the following reasons:

  • To move to Canada
  • To accept employment in Canada
  • To study
  • To perform other activities not covered by the terms of the eTA
  • To remain in Canada for more than 6 months

In this case, applicants should contact their nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate (such as the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo) to learn more about the requirements.

  • Marital status
  • Contact information (phone number, permanent address, email)

Travel to Canada from Japan

The Canadian eTA has a validity period of 5 years from the date of issue or until the individual’s passport expires (whichever comes first). It is a multiple-entry eTA, which means that the Japanese national is able to travel to Canada as many times as he or she desires as long as it is within the validity period.

Since the Canadian eTA was created for short-term visits, Japanese passport holders who have an eTA are able stay up to 6 months in Canada without a visa.
