Australian ETA for Canadian Citizens

The Australian ETA visa waiver is an electronic travel authorization that allows visitors from certain countries, including Canada, to visit Australia for purposes of tourism, business. It is a multiple entry authorization appropriate for short-term visits to the country that do not span more than 3 months in total.

Submitting an Australian ETA form, aside from being a requirement by the Australian Home Office for certain travelers, is also a convenient way to obtain travel authorization, since the entire application process is online.

Can Canadian Citizens Apply for the Australian ETA?

Yes, Canadian citizens are eligible to apply for the Australian ETA visa in order to visit the country for stays up to 90 days

However, there are certain requirements that all Canadian travelers will first need to meet in order to successfully apply for an Australian travel authorization. These requirements include:

  • A current email address where information and updates regarding the applicants ETA visa application can be sent
  • A valid Canadian passport with an expiration date 6 months beyond the traveler’s arrival into Australia
  • A valid credit or debit card to pay the online processing fee.

Additionally, travelers to Australia from Canada need to meet certain health requirements, such as being free or tuberculosis as well as some character requirements including not having any past criminal convictions prior to submitting an application.

The Australian ETA Visa Waiver Application from Canada

To apply for the Australian ETA, travelers from Canada will need to complete an online application form which requires them to list some biographical and passport information. Canadians can also expect to answer questions in the application regarding security as well as their travel plans.

Travelers must fill out the Australian ETA application as accurately as possible because any errors, mistakes or missing information may cause processing delays, and can even lead to a denial of the visa waiver in some instances.

Once the traveler has entered all the required information on the application, they will then be prompted to make a payment using a valid debit or credit card before the form can be submitted for processing by the Australian Home Office.

This also means that in the event the traveler’s passport is lost, damaged or stolen and a new passport is required, it will be necessary to submit a new application for an Australian ETA from Canada.

Traveling to Australia from Canada with an ETA

Canadian travelers will receive a copy of the approved ETA for Australia sent via email once the processing on their application has been completed .

It can take up to 3 business days for the processing of their Australian ETA visa application to be completed and sometimes longer if there is additional processing required. Therefore, Canadian citizens are advised to plan ahead and apply for an Australian visa waiver ahead of time to account for any delays that may occur.

It is important for travelers to bring a printed copy of the Australian ETA with them for the trip, as it may be required for entry into the country along with the traveler’s passport.

Canadian travelers arriving in Australia by air will also be required to fill out an Incoming Passenger Card which is typically used to make customs, quarantine, and cash declarations before arriving in the country. The IPC also asks the passenger to list the addresses in Australia where they will be staying and any contacts they may have on the ground.

Travelers should always make an effort to leave the country before an Australian ETA expires to avoid overstaying. The Australian Home Office also requires all foreign travelers to immediately inform them should their contact information, such as email address or phone number, changes.

The Australian ETA visa allows travelers from Canada to stay in Australia for a maximum of 90 consecutive days. Travelers are also allowed multiple entries into the country during its period of validity.

Canadian travelers that are interested in staying longer than 3 consecutive months in Australia will need to apply for one of the visa types from the nearest Australian embassy or consulate.
